Playing from behind against the Region 7-2A Lady Trojans, the Lady Yellow Jackets fell Friday night by a final score of 41-27.
The Enterprise girls played a close game throughout most of the first half. Amite County turned up the offense in the second half, out shooting Enterprise 28-15 in the game’s bottom half to come away with the victory.
“I thought our effort was good. Our defensive plan was to stop Ambria Handy and Taniya Ellis — they had hurt us last time we played,” said Lady Jackets coach Shane Adams. “We did a really good job at doing that, they just had other kids step up.”
The Lady Jackets hit the scorebook first, and managed to keep Amite County out of the book for most of the first period. With less than four minutes remaining, the Lady Trojans found the net. By the end of the first, Amite County had erased Enterprise’s lead and taken over, 9-8.
Having to play from behind in the second quarter, the Lady Jackets fought their way to a three-point deficit, 13-10, in the early part of the quarter. The Lady Trojans led 22-12 going into halftime.
“We were nine for 40 from the field and four for 17 at the free throw line. When you’re at that low of a percentage, it’s hard to win,” Adams said.
And hard for the Lady Jackets it was. The Lady Trojans came out of halftime and built up their lead. Although Enterprise started getting hot late in the third, the heat was not enough to pull within striking distance of Amite County, as the Lady Trojans led 33-19.
Enterprise managed to come within 10 points in the final period, 35-25, but that would be as close as they would get. Amite County turned up their offense another notch to outpace the Lady Jackets, winning by a final score of 41-27.
Senior Eden Ward led the Lady Jackets with 12 points, one rebound and two steals, while senior Carlee Nations followed with eight points, two rebounds, five assists and one steal. Senior Karlee Burgess made seven points and four rebounds. Senior Jana Nations led the Lady Jackets on the board with eight rebounds, one assist and two steals, while senior Monisha Pendleton followed with four rebounds and one assist.
Shanquanletha Cain led the Lady Trojans with 18 points.
With the loss, the Lady Jackets fall to 2-3 in Region 7-2A, with a 9-5 overall record. Amite County moves to 2-2 in Region 7-2A, with a 4-15 overall record.
The Lady Jackets will head to Loyd Star tonight to take on the Region 7-2A Hornets.
The Lady Trojans will also be in action tonight, as they travel to West Lincoln to take on the Region 7-2A Lady Bears.
