Wednesday was national signing day, when all the football-playing guys had their fun.

On Thursday, Brookhaven Academy senior Kailyn Jordan hit back for the girls by signing a softball scholarship to play for Southwest Mississippi Community College. The Lady Cougars’ speedster will join the Lady Bears next season as a hitter and infielder.

“Southwest has a great team. I like the girls there, how they work together and how they all get along,” Jordan said. “And Southwest works great for me because I kind of wanted to get away from home a little — but not too far.”

Jordan will drag a heavy sack full of accolades and accomplishments to college. She was the MAIS AA Region 3 Player of the Year and an MAIS All-Star in 2017, a season in which she batted .455 and had an on-base percentage of .511. She totaled 55 hits and stole 20 bases.

She has been a six-year starter at BA.

“I’ve played for BA my whole life. It was relaxed and fun, and I will miss my fans and friends, being with everybody I’ve known my whole life,” Jordan said.

Jordan’s speed has been a difference-maker, and it was the quality that impressed Southwest coaches the most.

“She has great speed on the bags. You can’t coach that — that’s something you have to recruit,” said Southwest softball coach Shea Jordan. “That ability to run the bags really makes her attractive to us. She can put the ball down and get to first, and she can hit with power. I think she has the potential to give us a lot of depth and push for a starting role in the infield.”

BA softball coach Becky Flowers called Jordan one of the most versatile athletes she’s ever coached.

“She’s a hard out for opposing pitchers because she can hit with power, or she can bunt and get on base,” she said. “I’ve had her on the team every season since I started coaching. It will definitely be a void for me not having her anymore. I’m going to miss her.”

Jordan’s mother, Angie Jordan, said her daughter has worked hard for the chance at a college scholarship.

“I’m just overwhelmed and so proud of everything she’s accomplished and the young lady she’s become,” she said. “I’m looking forward to watching her play at Southwest.”
