Lawrence County High School was evacuated and other schools in the district were placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a caller threatened to “blow the school up,” Sheriff Lessie Butler said.

The call came into the high school office sometime between lunch and 2 p.m., he said.

Butler said a man called the high school office just before 2 p.m. and asked the address of the school.

“The secretary asked him, ‘Do you want the post office box or the street address?’” he said. “He didn’t say anything and then he said he was coming to blow the school up and hung up.”

Butler said students were shuttled out to the football field until authorities determined they could be escorted to school buses.

Lawrence County Assistant Superintendent Twila Oaks said the school followed the official evacuation procedure.

She also said the county’s others schools were locked down as a precaution, but all students were dismissed on time.

Assistant Superintendent Twila Oaks said the schools followed the district’s evacuation procedure. Since the threat was made at the high school, it was evacuated, she said. The other two schools nearby — Rod Paige Middle School and Monticello Elementary — were put on lockdown and students were not allowed to leave.

“Once they determined the students at the high school were boarding buses, the students at the other schools were dismissed. It’s a precaution.”

Butler said the Mississippi Highway Patrol assisted in the investigation Thursday. He said no bomb was found.
