The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars came up short in a hard-fought semi-final battle with last year’s state runner-up Lamar Christian Friday, dropping a close one by a score of 47-42. In the consolation matchup versus the host Glenbrook Lady Apaches, The Lady Cougars were too much for Glenbrook, overpowering the host team by a score of 66-44.
In semi-final action, the Lady Cougars fought their way to a 22-22 deadlock as the horn sounded to end the first half of play. In the third, the Lamar Christian Lady Lions came our roaring and put some space between them and the ladies from BA that was too much to overcome. Never quitting, the Lady Cougars cut the lead in the fourth quarter but could not get shots to fall down the stretch to close the gap inside the eventual five-point margin.
Junior Jana Case led BA with a 17-point performance. Cameron Watson pitched in eight points while Kailyn Jordan and Makayla Martin added five points each. Watson and Anne Brantley Warren picked up nine and seven rebounds respectively for the Lady Cougars. Catherine Hannabass led Lamar with 20 points.
In the consolation match-up with the Glenbrook School Lady Apaches, the Lady Cougars came out quick posting a 10-point advantage after the first period of play. Behind full court pressure defense and an attack mode offense, BA did not allow Glenbrook to draw much closer on their way to the 22-point win.
Jana Case led BA with 16 points. Anne Brantley Warren chipped in 12 points while Kailyn Jordan added nine points. Cameron Watson and Makayla Martin had eight points each to round out the BA scoring leaders. Alyssa Martin led Glenbrook with 15 points.
Jana Case and Anne Brantley Warren were both named to the AA South All-Tournament Team.
The Lady Cougars will face Carroll Academy on Wednesday in the AA State Championship. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the John R. Gray Gymnasium.
