Brookhaven Academy graduate and Major League Baseball All-Star Corey Dickerson has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Tampa Bay Rays unloaded Dickerson Thursday in a trade for two other players and $1 million cash. Dickerson was only with Tampa for one season, in which he hit .282 with a career-high 27 homers, 33 doubles and 62 RBIs in 2017, and was the starting designated hitter in the All-Star game.

“Corey Dickerson adds a quality power threat to our lineup as evidenced by his 60-plus extra-base hits and 20-plus home runs each of the past two seasons,” Pirates’ general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement on the team’s website. “Corey is a driven player who will also add a quality presence to our clubhouse.”

Dickerson has 90 career home runs and has been a rising star in baseball since his MLB debut in 2013.

Tampa designated Dickerson for assignment Saturday, a condition that made him available for trade or sending down to a minor league franchise. Former teammate Evan Longoria, whom the Rays traded to the San Francisco Giants in December, questioned the wisdom of offloading Dickerson, as did other members of the Tampa Bay team.

Dickerson’s contract is good for almost $6 million in 2018, and the Rays will pick up $1 million of the total.
