Lady Jackets fall to Lady Cougars, 6-2 — Lawrence County continues undefeated with the victory over Enterprise

The Lady Cougars of Lawrence County beat the Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets 6-2 in the Loyd Star softball tournament Saturday.

With the weather getting nastier as the day went on, both teams seemed affected by the cold. Starting off slowly, the Cougars warmed up in the fourth, scoring four runs to pick up the win.

“We started off a little shaky,” Lady Cougars coach Meleah Howard said. “We were letting the cold and nasty weather get to us. But after we got focused, we started to settle in and play better.”

After getting the Lady Cougars to go 1-2-3 to start the game, the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in their half of the first. Senior Janna Nations would bring in the first run of the game on a RBI sacrifice in the first inning.

The Lady Cougars took the lead in the top half of the second scoring two runs. Senior Maddux Kirkland led off with a single. With two outs, sophomore Raylee Ready reached after being hit in the foot. Sophomore Ashley Holden gave the Cougars the lead with her two-run RBI single. Senior Josey Nations followed with a single.

Enterprise girls tied the game in their half of the second. Sophomore Belle Porter reached first on an error. With one out, senior Caley Cangemi also reached safely on an error. Senior Carley Polk tied up the game with her RBI single, before the Cougars could record the final out.

The game remained tied heading into the fourth inning.

The Cougars took over the game in their half of the fourth, scoring four runs. Ready reached first on an error. Holden also reached safely on an error. With one out senior Tyranesha Davis drew a walk, loading up the bases.

Sophomore Sydney Pevey broke the tie on her RBI single. Speights followed with an RBI single of her own. Kirkland hit an RBI single. Junior Julianna Johnson would finish the scoring for the Lady Cougars with an RBI single.

With time expired, the Lady Cougars picked up a 6-2 victory.

“”I thought both teams played very well, “ Yellow Jackets coach Tyler King said. “I was proud of my girls, the way we came out. We made really good decisions on our pitch selections. We battled all game, but we just came up a little short. We’ll get ready for big week coming up.”

Nations picked up the win for the Lady Cougars, going four innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out two.

Freshman Lauren Gartman took the setback on the rubber for the Lady Yellow Jackets, going four innings, allowing nine hits and six runs and striking out one.

Kirkland led the Lady Cougars with two singles and an RBI. Speights had two singles and an RBI. Holden had a single and two RBIs. Pevey had a single and an RBI. Ready had a single. Johnson also had a single. Nations finished off the hits with a single.

Polk led the Lady Yellow Jackets with a single and an RBI. Junior Morgan Smith hit a single. Jana Nations finished with an RBI.

Lawrence County Lady Cougars, 19-0 overall and 8-0 in Region 7-4A, hosted regional opponent Purvis Lady Tornadoes Monday.

The Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets will host regional foe West Lincoln Lady Bears in a home game today.
