Loyd Star defeats Franklin County, 8-4

Loyd Star erased a 3-0 lead on Saturday to knock off Franklin County 8-4.

“We started off slow, but then we started hitting the ball well,” Lady Hornets coach Jan Delaughter said. “We played good defense.”

With one out Tabitha Thompson got the Lady Bulldogs started with a single. Cloe Clanton followed with a single of her own. Sydney Scott drew a walk, loading up the bases with one out.

Marie Clanton knocked home the first run of the game on an RBI double. Brandi O’Neal drove in two runs on an RBI single to jump out to an early lead.

Malori Cade led off for Loyd Star with a single in their half of the first. Carson Hughey followed with a single. Meagan Poole brought both runners with a double. Marley Poole followed with a double.

Johanna Norman brought in Marley Poole on an RBI sacrifice. The Lady Hornets would score once more on a pitch that got past the catcher before the first inning came to a conclusion.

In the top half of the second Thompson singled for the Franklin County girls. Chloe Clanton followed with a single. The Loyd Star girls stranded the runners as the inning ended with a strikeout.

The Lady Hornets scored their final four runs in their half of the second taking advantage of Bulldog errors. Malori Cade and Meagan Poole reached on errors to begin the inning. Carley Beth Wallace drove in two runs on her RBI single. Brook Cade also contributed with a RBI single. The Loyd Star girls would score their final run of the game as Norman stole home.

In the top of the third, Colleen Parker scored the Lady Bulldogs final run of the game on a sacrifice.

The Franklin County girls attempted to muster up a rally in the top of the fourth, with Chasney Green hitting a single, with one out. The Lady Hornets snuffed out the rally getting the next two batters out.

The game was called for time after the top of the fourth.

Aly Floyd picked up the win for the Lady Hornets, going four innings while allowing seven hits and four runs and striking out two.

Kaytlyn Smith took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs as she went two innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while punching out one Hornet. Thompson pitched in relief for Franklin County.

Brandy O’Neal led the Lady Bulldogs with a double and two RBIs. Marie Clanton had a double and an RBI. Thompson hit two singles. Cloe Clanton also hit two singles. Chasney Green had a single. Parker finished for the Franklin County girls with an RBI.

Marley Poole led the Lady Hornets with a double and a single. Brooke Cade hit two singles and an RBI. Meagan Poole had a double and two RBIs. Malori Cade had a single. Hughey also had a single. Wallace had a single and two RBIs. Norman finished the game for the Lady Hornets with an RBI.

Loyd Star Lady Hornets, 8-8 overall, 3-2 in Region 7-2A, will host the Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats, 11-6 overall, 2-3 in Region 7-2A, today.
