A Brookhaven teenager was killed Monday night in a one-vehicle crash near his home, authorities said.

Tavarus Tymond Gilmore, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene around 6:44 p.m., said Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris.

Gilmore had left his home and lost control of the 2007 Toyota Camry on Denton Trail about a half-mile from the residence. He was headed south on Denton when the car left the roadway and struck a tree.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Brookhaven Fire Department and King’s Daughters Medical Center EMS responded to the crash.

Gilmore was a 2018 graduate of Brookhaven High School and a three-year member of JROTC.

BHS Principal David Martin was saddened to hear of Gilmore’s death.

“He was well-liked by his teachers and classmates,” he said. “He was well-known for his good attitude and never meeting a stranger. It’s a real tragedy to lose him so young.”
