Lady Cobras slither past Lady Bulldogs

It was a great evening Tuesday for softball in Wesson, as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs rolled into town for an important slow-pitch district game and rolled back out with a 13-3 loss to the Lady Cobras.

Wesson coach Michelle Nunnery was pleased with the focus shown by her team.

“Proud of the girls for getting the win. This was a big win for us as far as district goes,” said Nunnery.  “Our bats really came alive in the bottom of the sixth as we were able to put the game away.”

The Lady Cobra bats started their onslaught in the first inning and never let up. After forcing a quick three outs in the top of the first, the Lady Cobras tacked on two runs in the bottom of the first as junior Shelbi Maxwell hit a two-out, two-RBI double.

In the top of second, the Lady Bulldogs continued their offensive struggles with another three-batter inning. The Lady Cobras came in and scored two more runs with an RBI single by Arie Douglas and a sacrifice fly by Laynee Craps to push the Wesson lead to 4-0 after two innings.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs got on the scoreboard as Sidney Scott hit a solo home run. The Lady Cobras were quick to answer in the bottom of the fourth, as Madison Boleware Douglas started the inning off with a single to place runners in scoring position.

Senior Pitcher Shaylin Green helped herself out with an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in a run, and junior Anna Claire Crow followed up with an RBI single of her own.

Wesson led 6-1 after four innings.

Franklin County tried to put together a rally in the top of the fifth, as they got a runner in scoring position from a walk followed by a single. Then Tori Jones plated a run with an RBI double, but that is all the Lady Cobra defense would allow.

The Lady Cobras answered back in the bottom of the fifth when a fielder’s choice scored Natalie Bonds. Bonds had reached safely on a Lady Bulldog error, and Wesson led 6-2 after five innings.

The Lady Bulldogs got another run in the top of the sixth when Brandi O’Neal hit a solo home run, but that was all the Lady Bulldogs could manage to scratch out.

The Lady Cobras closed the game out in the bottom of the sixth as they took advantage of a few Lady Bulldog errors and strung some hits together.

Maxwell hit another two-RBI double that was followed by a Bonds triple. Bre Westbrook and Crow each added an RBI of their own, as the Lady Cobras pushed across six runs to put them ahead 13-3, ending the game by way of the 10-run rule.

Wesson also took a win in the junior varsity game 9-2.
