The Loyd Star Lady Hornets picked up their first soccer win of the season on Monday night, as they took down the Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats 7-0. In the boys’ game it was another big Hornet victory, as Loyd Star topped the Bobcats by an identical 7-0 score.

The Lady Hornets got off to a slow start, but when they started scoring, the goals kept on rolling. The Lady Bobcats defense held their own for much of the first half, clearing away shot after shot.

“The first half we weren’t playing like a team,” said Lady Hornet Morgyan Brister. “We weren’t passing or communicating like a team. The second half we started playing like a team and were able to pass the ball past their defense.”

Mary Claire McCurley of Loyd Star agreed with the assessment given by Brister.

“In the first half we didn’t play like we were able to,” said McCurley. “The second half we played with much better effort.”

The Lady Hornets started off keeping the ball inside the Lady Bobcats territory and had several chances to score early on.

The Lady Bobcats defense was able to clear the ball down the field and threatened several times to score themselves.

Controlling the ball, Adriahna McDavid of Loyd Star was able to break past the Lady Bobcats defense for the game’s first goal.

“We came out in the first half, but not so much like we needed to be,” said Lady Hornets Hanna Michele. “In the second half we worked together better as a team. When we help each other out and communicate, success comes along the way.”

The Lady Hornets would tack on one more goal before half time as McCurley kicked the ball in to give the Lady Hornets a 2-0 lead at the break.

In the second half McCurley exploded for three more goals. Michelle and Brister also had goals for the Lady Hornets.

The boys’ game was much like the girls’ game. Both teams had chances in the early parts of the game to score but couldn’t get the ball past the defenders. Loyd Star would eventually move the ball past the Bogue Chitto defense with relentless offensive pressure.

“We played good,” said Loyd Star senior Cole Carpenter. “We worked together well and when we had opportunities, we took them.”

Loyd Star scored its first goal as Carpenter slipped past the Bobcat defense.

Peyton Warren of Loyd Star was also able to run through the Bobcat defense for the game’s second goal.

“This was definitely one of the best games we’ve played,” said Warren.

Loyd Star led 4-0 at halftime.

Carpenter and Warren ended the game with a hat trick apiece as they both totaled three goals each. Payne Walker also added a goal for the Hornets.

“We played well tonight,” said Loyd Star assistant coach Adam Smith. “Bogue Chitto has a very talented player (Yosvin Hernandez) that they play up front and he scores a lot of goals for them. Our defense played really well, and we were able to slow him down. Offensively, we did a good job getting past their backline.”

Loyd Star will travel to Raymond Thursday to take on the Rangers before hosting Wesson on Friday.

Bogue Chitto is done until after the Christmas break. The Bobcats next play on Jan. 10 at West Lincoln.
