The Lady Hornets wasted no time in scoring, as eighth-grader Mary Claire McCurley would score the game’s first goal within the first five minutes of play.

“It was a good game,” Lady Hornets junior Morgyn Brister said. “We played strong and spaced out the ball. We kept the communication and teamwork up.”

Both teams would soon settle into a defensive fight as each team had scoring chances but were unable to score.

With the game reaching the halfway mark of the first half, Lady Hornets junior Adrinahna McDavid would break past Lady Bobcats defenders for the Lady Hornets second goal of the half.

“We came out a little slow in the first half,” Lady Hornets senior Hannah Michele said. “But we were able to pick it up in the second half and worked better as a team.”

The Lady Hornets led 2-0 at halftime.

The Lady Hornets opened the second half scoring quickly as junior Anna Ferguson broke free from Lady Bobcats defenders for her first goal of the night.

After a short defensive battle, Lady Hornets junior Tabby Wyatt pressed down the field for a goal, giving the Lady Hornets a 4-0 lead.

“It was a hostile environment,” Lady Hornets sophomore Hanna Kelly said. “But we were able to pick up the win.”

The Lady Hornets would also get second half goals from Kelly, Ferguson, and McDavid before the game ended.

Hornets 4, Bobcats 1

The boy’s game was a game of two different halves. The Loyd Star Hornets started out hot in the first, scoring four goals. In the second half, the Bogue Chitto Bobcats played better defense as they kept the Hornets from scoring a goal throughout the whole second half.

The Hornets scored quickly as Loyd Star senior Cole Carpenter would press down field for the game’s first score.

Loyd Star attempted several shots afterwards, but Bogue Chitto was able to come up with the needed stops.

Loyd Star freshman Peyton Warren score the Hornets second goal as he was able to get the ball past Bogue Chittos sliding goalie.

Carpenter would soon follow for his second goal of the night.

Warren would score the Hornets final score of the game as he once again was able to get the ball past a sliding goalie.

With time running out, the Bobcats ended Loyd Star’s shutout bid as Michail Rayborn was able to slip past defenders for Bogue Chitto’s only goal.

The second half saw Bogue Chitto camped in Loyd Star’s backfield but unable to find the goal.

“It was a rough first half,” Bobcats coach Shane Nipps said. “We played smarter in the second half and passed the ball better. We just weren’t able to find the back of the net.”

Bogue Chitto will host Lawrence County on Tuesday before finishing their season on Thursday by hosting West Lincoln.

Loyd Star and coach Dale Brister will host West Lincoln Tuesday before finishing regular season play at Wesson Thursday.
