Haven Studio classes are filling up fast

Classes are filling up fast for children’s acting classes at The Haven.

The new program, called Haven Studio, features weekly hour-long classes for ages 7 to 10 and 11 to 14. The younger students meet on Tuesdays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m., while the older students meet immediately following from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.

The spring session starts Tuesday and runs through April 16.

Registration fee is $25 which includes a T-shirt and the session cost, due at registration, is $150.

Students will learn acting, singing and dancing techniques, said Emily Waterloo, Brookhaven Little Theatre’s managing artistic director.

Haven Studio is possible because of the completed renovations to what used to be known as the Marquee Room. Waterloo said the renovations of the former storage space in the building attached to The Haven were paid for with a donation from Brookhaven Trust, a grant from Mississippi Arts Commission and private donations.

Besides Haven Studio, BLT plans to host smaller shows such as dinner theater, concerts, murder mystery theater and actor workshops. The room can seat about 100 to 150 patrons.

Haven Studio will be the first project planned in the new rehearsal studio. It gives BLT a way to focus on children’s theater beyond the summer workshop.

“We’ve had overwhelming interest,” she said.

This allows BLT to offer programs away from the larger stage and auditorium, especially when performers and crews are preparing for a show.

“It’s a better environment to be able to teach,” she said.

At Haven Studio, students will learn techniques in acting, singing and dancing that will help them prepare for the audition process and also give the opportunities to perform.

“Our goal is confidence,” she said. “We want them to be confident when they’re performing. I think this will give them the skills that they need.”
