First Baptist Church Brookhaven will hold its eighth annual “I Love India” garage sale the first weekend of March.

Since 2012, the church has gathered up gently used items — ranging from fine jewelry and quality furniture to paperback books and toddler toys — and sold them to interested new owners, donating 100 percent of the money raised to Agape Outreach Ministries in India.

Home to more than 1.3 billion people who primarily practice Hinduism, India is the second-most populous country in the world. More than 75 percent of the population lives on less than $2 per day, and 21 percent of the people don’t get enough to eat.

Agape Outreach supports more than 50 pastors across India, and donations enable them to focus on public outreach.

“They’re seeing people come to Christ, but it takes somebody over there to get the word out,” said Carrie Sones, who helps coordinate the sale.

“It’s really, really huge,” said volunteer Sandra Gerald, taking a break from early set up for the event.

“It’s the garage sale everybody looks forward to,” she said. “The sale benefits the whole community, not just the mission, because we sell things at really good prices.”

“It helps a lot of people who aren’t able to buy some of these things at new prices,” Gerald said.

The sale begins Friday evening, March 1, at 4 p.m. An early admission fee of $20 lets shoppers get a head start on the large selection of items available. Entry at 5 p.m. costs $10, and admittance from 6-8 p.m. is $5. Admission on Saturday is free, from 6:30-11:30 a.m.

Everyone working with the sale is hoping and praying it will have overwhelming success, as it has had in years past.

“We just want to spread the Gospel. That’s really our mission,” said Sones.

Gerald is confident that anyone who comes will be glad they did.

“It’s a blessing to be a part of.”
