The Brookhaven High School tennis team played their first match of the 2019 season on Tuesday. The BHS varsity defeated Wesson 5-2 and the junior varsity won 2-of-4 matches played.
BHS boys’ and girls’ singles both drew tough assignments. James Gardner played a good match against Wesson’s Drew Hulon and came within a couple of points from playing a third and deciding set.
Newcomer Victoria Sittig — a senior transfer from Franklin County — played her first match for BHS and came up short against a very steady Ally Everett. All of the Panther doubles teams won their matches.
Brookhaven tennis plays two more matches this week, weather permitting. Today Lawrence County will host the Panthers at the Atwood Water Park courts beginning at 4 p.m. Friday BHS travels to Clinton to take on 6A Clinton High School beginning at 3:30 p.m.
