A group of community college students are collecting books to donate to elementary school libraries in honor of first lady Deborah Bryant.

“The first lady has a passion for childhood literacy and has promoted it throughout the state and the Mississippi Federation of College Republicans hopes to honor her efforts by hosting this book drive,” said MFCR Executive Director Hannah Mason, of Brookhaven.

Through March 22, members of Co-Lin College Republicans are collecting books that are new or in gently used condition. Drop off locations are Evelyn W. Oswalt Library at 1028 J.C. Redd Drive in Wesson and Expectations at 637 Brookway Blvd. in Brookhaven.

The books will be given to local school libraries, Mason said.

“Mrs. Bryant signed several of these books, thus making them mementos to be cherished for years to come,” Mason said.

MFCR participates in annual group projects which benefit the state. Copiah-Lincoln Community College’s group is one of eight chapters in Mississippi.

“This year, they have unanimously chosen to host a book drive honoring first lady Deborah Bryant,” Mason said.

Local donations of books will be given to The Reading Nook, Brookhaven Elementary School and Brookhaven Christian Academy.

“The amount of books given to each school all depends on the community’s participation in the drive,” she said.

Each school will receive at least one book signed by Bryant.

“College Republicans at Co-Lin hope that the community will help to make this a huge success,” Mason said. “Several faculty members at Co-Lin have offered to give students extra credit and community service hours if they participate. Co-Lin’s Child Care Center will be encouraging their children to bring books and Lincoln County Republican Women are asking all members to support MFCR by donating books.”

Mason believes literary education is the key to a child’s success.

“It is my hope that the great residents of Brookhaven, Lincoln County and Mississippi have the same belief,” she said.
