Thirty-year-old Andrew Hammond, found guilty last week of possession of weapons by a convicted felon, will go back to prison to serve out the rest of his 10-year sentence for manslaughter followed by two more consecutive 10-year sentences on the weapons’ convictions, according to court records.

Hammond, of Crystal Springs, was sentenced in January 2011 by Lincoln County Circuit Judge David Strong for the fatal shooting of 45-year-old William “Bubba” Thompson of Bogue Chitto at the residence of Thompson’s daughter, Gena Thompson.

Hammond was given 20 years on the manslaughter charge with 10 suspended and 10 to serve, with five years post release supervision. He was also ordered to pay court cost, $5,000 fine and full restitution to the victim’s family for medical and funeral expenses.

He received an early release in November 2014.

He found himself behind bars again in December 2017, arrested on charges of aggravated assault and weapon possession by a convicted felon after he was accused of shooting an acquaintance in the legs with a New England .410 shotgun during a dispute over property.

Monday morning, Strong ordered Hammond to serve the balance of the original sentence. Later in the afternoon, Judge Michael Taylor sentenced Hammond on the weapons charges. After a two-day trial in Taylor’s court and an hour of deliberations last week, a jury found Hammond guilty of simple assault rather than aggravated assault.

Taylor sentenced Hammond to six months for the assault conviction, but suspended it.

Hammond has been incarcerated in the Lincoln County Jail since his arrest in December 2017.
