Three months after Brookhaven police dragged an alleged trespasser armed with a handmade bayonet out from under an occupied home on North Jackson Street, he’s been picked up again and charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Police officers arrested 34-year-old Gary DeLaughter following a traffic stop on East Monticello Street Thursday. He was booked into Lincoln County Jail at 11:26 a.m.

According to a social media post by the Brookhaven Police Department, officers were called to do a welfare check on a man at a house on Albert Street. They found the man OK but he reported his gun had been stolen.

Witness accounts led police to DeLaughter, who was a passenger in the car stopped by police on East Monticello.

Officers recovered a firearm from DeLaughter.

In December, DeLaughter was arrested at 1:30 a.m. on charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

A homeowner on North Jackson reported he heard “moaning and groaning” underneath the home just after midnight. Police arrived and surrounded the home, turned their lights toward the crawl space and using two canisters of a tear gas-type irritant forced DeLaughter to emerge.

Police Chief Kenneth Collins said at the time of DeLaughter’s arrest for trespassing, the man was in possession of two knives, with one lashed to the end of the stick, “like a bayonet.” A video by the homeowner posted to social media of the arrest shows a four-inch knife duct-taped to the end of an old board.

In January 2015, DeLaughter pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary of a dwelling and was sentenced by Lincoln County Circuit Judge Michael Taylor to custody of Mississippi Department of Corrections for 20 years with 14 suspended for six years to serve and five years post release supervision.
