A city in the Mississippi Delta is about to start letting restaurants sell drinks with alcohol on Sundays.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports that the new policy begins this weekend in Greenwood. Hours are limited to 10 a.m. until midnight.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams told the City Council in February that people were “aggravated” they could not drink alcohol in Greenwood restaurants on Sundays, and some were driving to Grenada so they could.
Johnny Ballas is manager of the Crystal Grill restaurant. He says the rule will be “a great convenience” for customers.
But, local resident Gregory Dees says he has seen alcoholism tear families apart. He says expanding the availability of alcohol in restaurants will contribute to Greenwood having a reputation as “a run-down type of community.”
