Principal: ‘The band will not miss a beat’

Even though their leader will soon be departing, the band at Loyd Star Attendance Center will not miss a beat.
The Lincoln County School Board approved the resignation of band director Jeremy Donald Monday night during its regular monthly meeting.
The meeting was held at Loyd Star in the school library while Donald and his students were next door in the cafeteria for the end-of-the-year band banquet.
Principal Robin Case said students and parents are sad Donald is leaving the program after three years, but his work with the band is leaving the program in good shape for his predecessor.
“He has done a remarkable job with helping all of our band members move forward with their skills,” she said. “He raised the bar and he has been able to work with the kids and help them come to that bar. We don’t see anything but our band continuing to climb. He’s leaving us on firm footing.”
Donald, 30, lives in Pearl and has been commuting for the three years he’s been a Hornet. He’s taking a job closer to home, he said.
Case expects the position to be filled soon.
“It’s not official yet, but we do have a commitment from someone and we’re excited about him coming on and have no doubts that our band will continue to thrive,” she said. “The band will not miss a beat.”
With less than two months of school left, Donald has been saying his goodbyes. That’s been difficult.
“It is, definitely, when you leave any kids like these,” he said. “These kids, we’ve gotten close. I know they’ll do great. As I’ve told them in the past, ‘I’m just the band director. They are the band themselves.’ They’re the ones who go out and do great things every week.”
Donald expects to hear good things from the Hornet Band.
“I know no matter who steps in front of them, because of the caliber of kids they are, they’re going to be just fine,” he said. “They’re going to work hard. This is their program and they want it to succeed.”
