Brookhaven aldermen plan to meet Monday to approve an updated version of the city’s 11-year-old smoke-free ordinance.

“As time changes, it’s time to update the language of the ordinance,” Mieshia Smith told the board at a recent meeting. Smith is the project director for Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition of Copiah and Lincoln counties.

Aldermen were given copies of the ordinance — which were about as thick as a magazine — to peruse and edit with their two cents. They’ll meet Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the boardroom of the Lincoln County-Brookhaven Government Complex to go over the ordinance and make any changes at that time before hearing a motion to approve.

Alderwoman-at-Large Karen Sullivan serves on the board of directors for Mississippi Tobacco-Free Coalition of Copiah and Lincoln counties and is amazed at the work Smith does to promote a smoke-free community.

“That’s the best kept secret in Brookhaven,” she said. “She does so much work with those adults and youth and the especially youth on the dangers of cigarette smoking, e-smoking and second-hand smoke.”

Ward 1 Alderman Dorsey Cameron flipped pages of the lengthy document and questioned if e-cigarettes are on the list.

They are.

“Is there anything in there about legalizing marijuana?” he asked.

“It’s strictly tobacco,” Smith told him.
