(AP) — Free beer tomorrow, the old joke goes, but it’s coming true in one Mississippi city.

The Oxford Eagle reports city aldermen voted 5-1 Tuesday to allow stores that specialize in selling beer to offer free 1-ounce samples to shoppers.

A store could offer a customer up to five samples in a 24-hour period.

Jackson Beer Co. owner Allen Jackson says the ordinance will allow him to hold tasting events without making food available, as is required now.

The ordinance will take effect 30 days after it’s signed into law. Stores will have to pass an inspection by the Oxford Police Department. They must show they have a designated area for beer-drinking and that samples go only to those 21 and older. Stores must have at least eight draft beer taps.
