(AP) — A north Mississippi jailer has been arrested on charges that he tried to smuggle a cellphone into the jail.
DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco tells WMC-TV that 35-year-old Christopher Hooker of Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested Saturday morning.
Hooker was booked into the jail where he had worked as a guard and is charged with one count of furnishing contraband to prisoners.
The sheriff says an inmate promised Hooker more than $1,000 if the jailer could get him a phone. Rasco says he fired Hooker.
Hooker is free on $3,000 bail.
Jail records show Hooker is scheduled to appear in court on May 10. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
