Panthers in 5A south state meet Saturday

Fresh off sweeping the Region 3-5A track meet Tuesday the Brookhaven High track teams compete Saturday in the 5A South State Meet at Hattiesburg High.

The Panthers and Lady Panthers both won team titles Tuesday by defeating teams from Forest Hill, Laurel, Natchez, South Jones, Wayne County, West Jones and Wingfield.

Kyja Willis won first place in the 100-meter dash for BHS. Tiyuna Harris won the 400-meter dash and Miyah Miller won the 800-meter run and the 1,600-meter race. The Lady Panthers 4×400 relay team took first place. Taylor Levy and Kortne Nelson both jumped 6-foot-6 in the pole vault, which was good enough for first place. Ah’Menya Rancifer kept up her domination of the throwing events as she won first for the Lady Panthers in the discus and shot put. Rancifer is the defending 5A state champ in the shot put and was second last year in the discus.

Ellie Slay finished third in the 800-meter race and second in the 1,600-meter run. Bailey Pounds finished second in the 3,200-meter race. BHS finished second in the 4×100, 200 and 400 relays. Miracle Mobley was third in the high jump and Ayanna McNairy was second in the long and triple jumps.

Jacob Britt won the 1,600-meter race for the Panthers and his teammate Grayson Childress finished in second place. Sam Arnold won the 3,200-meter run and Britt and Childress followed in second and third place respectively. Norman Woodard won the 300-meter hurdles while Quintaye Bates won the high jump. Isaiah Wall swept the top spot in long and triple jump while also finishing third in high jump.

Dontrae Smith and Norman Woodard were second and third in the 110-meter hurdles. The BHS relay teams finished second in the 4×100, third in the 4×200 and second in the 4×800. Bates was third in the triple jump and Woodard finished second in the pole vault for BHS coach Darion Dorsey.

Field events begin at 11 a.m. in Hattiesburg Saturday.
