BHS track in state meet Friday at Pearl High

The Brookhaven High Panther track teams had a strong showing at Hattiesburg High in the 5A South State Meet Saturday. Friday the Panthers look to keep that momentum going at the MHSAA 5A State Track and Field Meet hosted by Pearl High School.

At South State the Lady Panthers captured first place and the Panthers finished in second place. Kyja Willis won the 100-meter dash for the Lady Panthers. Ah’Menya Racifer took first place in the shot put and the Lady Panthers won relay races in the 4×200 and 4×800.

The 4×200 relay team is made up of Genesis Frazier, Kaylon Levi, Tiyuna Harris and Willis. The 4×800 team includes Ayanna McNairy, Abby Roberts, Ellie Slay and Miyah Miller.

Also qualifying to compete at state were Harris in the 400-meter dash, Miller in the 800-meter run, Rancifer in the discus, and the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.

Members of the 4×100 relay team include Aniyah Cook, Frazier, Levi and Willis. The 4×400 team is Miller, Cook, McNairy and Harris.

State qualifiers for the Panthers included Jacob Britt in the 1,600-meter run; Britt and Grayson Childress in the 3,200-meter run; Norman Woodard and Dontrae Smith in the 110-meter hurdles; Woodard in the 300-meter hurdles, the 4×100 relay and the 4×800 relay; Quintaye Bates in the high jump; and Isaiah Wall in the long jump and triple jump.

Don Blandon, Davion Smith, Nick Williams and Jaquarius Edwards run on the 4×100 relay team. Sam Mabile, Jerrivonte Harris, Jake Thompson and Collin Kellum make up the BHS 4×800 relay.

Steven Keys is head boys’ track coach for the Panthers and the girls’ team is led by Tonya Johns. Darien Dorsey and Shannon Knott serve as assistants.
Field events begin at 11 a.m. and the track portion starts at 11:15 a.m. with relays races.
