(AP) — A Mississippi police officer shot a partially undressed man reported to be acting erratically, but a sheriff says the man appears to have then shot himself.

The incident happened Tuesday morning in Lumberton.

Lamar County Sheriff Danny Riegel says a man was reported to be running into a highway from the parking lots of Lumberton city hall and a store, waving a gun.

Riegel says a Lumberton officer tried to order the man to lower his gun. But when the man returned to his truck, Riegel says he aimed the gun at the officer. The officer fired, hitting the man in the upper torso. Riegel says the man apparently then shot himself in the chest.

The state Crime Lab in Pearl is conducting an autopsy. No name has been released.
