West Lincoln duo is state track champs

The West Lincoln Running Bears had a strong showing Monday at the MHSAA 2A State Track and Field Meet hosted by Pearl High.

In the 1,600-meter run freshman Chase Spring of West Lincoln ran a 4.55.11 to win first place over Deonta Jones of Strayhorn by three seconds. In the south state meet Spring finished third with a time of 5:07. He was first at the Region 4-2A meet with a time of 5:08 and first at the Division 7-2A meet with a time of 5:22.

The Bears weren’t done, as sophomore Tiler Castillo won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes and eight seconds. Castillo beat the second-place runner from Saint Patrick by four seconds. Castillo had previously won the same event at the south state, region and division meets. Both Spring and Castillo are members of the strong West Lincoln Cross Country program.

In the 800-meter race Loyd Star junior Leondre Dodds finished second. Dodds was just edged out by one second when Mar’Ques McCray beat him in a time of 2:03.31. Dodds finished fourth in the state as a sophomore last season.

In the 4A meet the 4 x100 relay team from Lawrence County beat out McComb and Greenwood for the top prize. Relay team members for the Cougars included Perez Tyler, Jerome Dudley, Kylan Cooper and Quincy Lewis. Dudley is a senior who has signed to play football next season at Southwest. Cooper and Perez are juniors, Lewis is a sophomore and all three play football for the Cougars.
