Dozens of political candidates will take a few minutes each to introduce themselves at the podium Saturday at an “old fashioned” rally, but the real stumping will take place in the crowd.

More than 50 candidates for county, district and state elections have signed up to either appear in person or be represented by a proxy, said Willie Greer with A2Z Printing in Brookhaven, which is hosting the rally Saturday at the parking lot beside the historic old train depot at 125 S. Whitworth Ave.

All candidates who will appear on the Lincoln County ballot have been invited.

“Bring the family and lawn chairs and come hear the candidates,” Greer said.

The event begins at 3 p.m. with music from the Bridge Band Trio followed by candidate introductions from 4 to 8 p.m.

The KDMC Foundation is selling hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages as a fundraiser for its causes.

Candidates and their representatives will be available to talk to people and answer questions during the event.

“Their real opportunity is to get down and mingle with the people, and people get the chance to get to know them,” Greer said.

He is encouraging voters to come take advantage of the opportunity to hear from the many candidates who are seeking office.

“We have a civic responsibility to vote, but I don’t think responsibility starts with voting. I think the responsibility starts with knowing who the candidates are and what they stand for and making an educated vote,” he said. “That’s what we wanted to do. We’re trying to get back to that because in this day of social media and sound clips and half quotes and all that, it’s hard to know exactly what’s real and what’s not.”
