(AP) — A child shot another child at the home of a north Mississippi sheriff.
WCBI-TV reports the grandson of Webster County interim sheriff Andy McCants was shot while he and his older brother were playing with a gun.
Sheriff’s Deputy Dillion Cates tells WTVA-TV the wounded boy was flown by helicopter to a Jackson hospital. Cates says the boy was injured by a small-caliber pistol.
A Department of Public Safety spokesman says no criminal charges are expected. McCants said the shooting was ruled an accident.
It’s unclear who owns the gun or how the children obtained it.
McCants was named acting sheriff in January after Sheriff Tim Mitchell was charged with stealing guns and drugs, seeking sex with inmates and threating employees.
