Dairy Day at Brookhaven Farmers Market is relocating

Just like the church singers who will be serenading shoppers with song Friday, the annual Dairy Day at the Brookhaven Farmers Market is doing some traveling.

Dairy Day is making the move from Railroad Park to the Lincoln Civic Center’s covered barn so shoppers, vendors and The Macedonia Travelers can stay dry.

It’s a one-time move because of the rain, said Rebecca Bates with the Lincoln County MSU Extension Service.

“Everything’s going on as normal,” she said. “We’re just moving to the livestock barn because of the rain.”

The National Weather Service in Jackson is predicting showers and possibly a thunderstorm in Brookhaven Friday morning. The rain will cool things off a bit as temperatures aren’t expected to rise past 85.

Because of Dairy Day’s added attractions, the covered arena may work out to be the perfect venue, Bates said.

The Farmers Market will run from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The antique tractor show will still be there, and there will be visits by area dairy farmers and representatives from the Dairy Alliance as well as baby goats and calves for the youth to feed and pet.

4-H agent Jennifer Williams and Latoya Evans will be helping with activities for kids — Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers will be making homemade ice cream and Lincoln County Master Gardeners will be teaching children how to pot plants.

Farm Bureau is grilling hamburgers to sell during Dairy Day with proceeds returned to the market, Bates said. They’ll also have free grilled sweet corn while it lasts. The corn is a popular treat and goes fast, she said.

There will also be free ice cream and chocolate milk from Prairie Farms.

Vendors will also offer homemade cakes and pies, goat soaps and lotions, and reusable food storage wraps made from honeycomb and fabric.

Local honey will also be sold.

Regularly, the Brookhaven Farmers Market is held Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the park next to South Whitworth Avenue, and Tuesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Godbold Transportation Center. The Tuesday market — which features an air-conditioned building and plenty of free parking — will start June 11.

Bates is expecting a good selection of vegetables — cabbage, onion, squash, peppers and a limited supply of tomatoes.

Vendors are still needed for the regular market at both locations. No fees are charged for spots. To register as a vendor, call 601-835-3460.

Entertainers are also needed for both the Tuesday and Friday markets.
