(AP) — Officials say the former managers of a Mississippi Gulf Coast apartment complex stole tenants’ rent money and then sent them eviction notices.
WLOX-TV reports ex-managers Mariette and Eric LeFort were arrested in May on embezzlement charges.
Wayne Breaux, who owns the complex, estimates at least $50,000 is missing. He says he discovered the problem when three tenants came to him with eviction notices and proof they had paid their rent. Breaux later asked a justice court judge to dismiss all the evictions.
Tenant Jamie Jensen says she’s thankful she had check stubs and had feared she would have to pay rent again.
The LeForts both posted bail and have been released from custody. It’s unclear if either has a lawyer. They didn’t respond to requests for comment.
