A Wesson man accused of shooting to death a 7-year-old boy last month will face a Brookhaven judge Tuesday at a preliminary hearing in city court.

Judge Brad Boerner denied bond for 24-year-old John Weathersby at his initial appearance June 25. Weathersby is charged with murder in the death of Quantavious Allen Jr., who was fatally struck by a bullet when Weathersby allegedly fired at Allen’s home June 12.

Boerner will revisit bond for Weathersby Tuesday and also appoint a public defender for him if he is not able to hire his own attorney.

Weathersby allegedly sprayed Allen’s home on Grant Road with rounds from an AK-47, according to police. The boy was hit while playing a video game in the living room. His 5-year-old sister was playing nearby and his father was in a bedroom watching television. Allen was flown to University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died several hours after the shooting.

Boerner considered recommendations and the charge pending against Weathersby at the June 25 hearing and ordered him held without bond. He is being held in the Copiah County Jail.

Weathersby’s preliminary hearing will be held at 1 p.m. in city court, which is located in the Lincoln County Justice Court building.
