Volunteers  for Operation Christmas Child are hard at work making sure children around the world get gifts for Christmas and hear about Jesus. Locally, churches are preparing to package and ship present-filled boxes to aid in the effort.  First Baptist Brookhaven will be the drop-off location for area churches. Boxes will travel from there to Atlanta before going around the world. Last year, the Brookhaven area donated 3,942 boxes to Operation Christmas Child. Volunteer Juli Mills said the goal for 2019 is 4,336. About 40 churches across the county are packing boxes.

Below is a look back at a few more good news headlines.

• Two Wesson athletes recently signed letters of intent to play at Co-Lin. Catherine Wilson and Shelbi Maxwell will join the Lady Wolves after stellar high school careers. Wilson is a senior slugger who plays catcher and can also be used at either corner infield spot.  She hit for a .273 average with 10 doubles and 28 RBIs as a junior. Long considered as one of the quickest players in the area, Maxwell is a short stop who can also play in the outfield. As a junior she posted a .582 average with 52 runs scored.

• Veterans were honored at the annual Lincoln County Veterans Day program. Maj. Gen. Leon Collins, retired, former adjutant general of the Mississippi Army and Air National Guard, spoke to the crowd gathered at the Lincoln Civic Center.

• Registration is underway for families who need ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner. Brookhaven Outreach Ministries wants to provide a frozen turkey for families along with bags of groceries to complete the meal and then some, said Executive Director Jerry Durr.

It’s a program that’s been going on for three decades. The food giveaway is Nov. 26 but families must register by Nov. 19 to participate. Individuals must apply for the giveaway at the Outreach Ministries Distribution Center at 216 West Court Street by providing proof of household income, the number of people in the household and their ages.
