At least two people were injured and several houses damaged after at least one confirmed tornado cut across Southwest Lincoln County Monday.

Meteorologist Dan Byrd with the National Weather Service in Jackson said at least one tornado touched down in the Bogue Chitto area, but survey crews would be in Lincoln County today to inspect the damage to determine the tornado’s Enhance Fujita-scale rating.

Byrd said a tornado was also confirmed in Silver Creek in Lawrence County.

Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Clifford Galey said there was widespread damage “south of Bogue Chitto Road, west of I-55 all the way to all the county lines. We’ve got all kinds of damage.”

Traffic stalled on Bogue Chitto Road west of I-55 as crews worked to remove trees and secure power lines. Crumpled tin was caught in a tree line near Concord Lane. District 4 Supervisor Eddie Brown had crews operating a bulldozer and an excavator to move large trees that had fallen across Concord Lane.

Amateur video shows what appears to be a tornado near Bogue Chitto. Multiple trees were reported down along Hwy. 98 near Hwy. 569 also. Hwy. 98 was closed to traffic due to storm debris. MDOT crews were on the scene working to clear roadways after the storm passed.

Galey said all roads were cleared shortly after 7 p.m.

Hail was also reported in Bogue Chitto, East Lincoln and Fair River.

Galey said two people received minor injuries at their residences during the storm but did not know the cause of the injuries.

Very minor injuries were reported in Franklin County due to severe weather. Tornado damage to a house and barn was also reported there.

A tornado-warned storm passed through Lawrence County at about 4:30 p.m. A funnel cloud was reported near Monticello.

Area schools delayed dismissal due to the severe weather. Principal Scott Merrell at Bogue Chitto Attendance Center said his students were dismissed at 4:45 p.m.

“We’ll get out and check on them and do what we can,” he said.
