Basketball roundup; area teams begin region play

Here is a look at how area schools faired as division play began Tuesday night.

Loyd Star, West Lincoln

The West Lincoln Bears swept a pair of games from Loyd Star in the region opener for both teams Tuesday night. The Lady Bears were 65-53 winners and in the boys’ game WL won big, 79-41.

In the boys’ game WL coach Brooks Smith got 26 from Karlton Byrd and 16 apiece from Anthony Hughes and Ty Brotherns in the win.

Stephen Mills scored 15 for LS and Reese DeHart added 11 points.

West Lincoln (7-7) faces Bogue Chitto Friday and Loyd Star (8-7) and coach Seth Britt travel to Enterprise.

The Lady Bears (6-8) got 21 points from junior Brittany Sturkey in their victory. Kara Beth Addison added 15, Bailey Wilson scored 13 points and Paige Shedd chipped in 10 points for WL.

Sophomore point guard Aubrey Britt scored a game high 25 points for the Lady Hornets (9-6) and coach Gene “Moochie” Britt.

Wesson, Bogue Chitto

Wesson and Bogue Chitto kicked of their region schedules by splitting a pair of games Tuesday night. The Lady Bobcats were 49-42 winners and the Wesson boys won 67-28.

Katelynn Palmer led the Lady Cats (15-3) with 19 points and 13 rebounds in the win. Freshman De’Mya Porter scored 14 points and Fayth Magee added 11 points for coach Robbie Walters.

Kionnna Gibson scored 10 points to lead coach Michelle Nunnery’s Lady Cobras (7-9).

In the boy’s game Darrian Gibson scored 14 points for the Cobras (7-7) and Collin McGowan chipped in 10 points. Zack Upkins scored 11 points to lead the Bobcats (4-12).

Wesson coach Rusty Newman and his Cobras have a big road game Friday at Amite County (10-3).

Enterprise

The Jackets traveled to face the Trojans of Amite County Tuesday in Liberty.

The Lady Jackets (3-10) picked up their second straight victory with a 40-30 win over AC. Natalie Harris led EAC with 20 points and Ashlyn Bland chipped in five points.

In the boys’ game coach Shane Adams and his team were overwhelmed by a stout Amite County attack — 68-24. Dylan Carter led the Jackets (2-11) with eight points and Hib Johnson added five points.

Brookhaven Academy

The Cougars swept Centreville in a non-district matchup Tuesday.

Coach Ron Kessler and his Lady Cougars moved to 14-8 with a 47-30 win over the Lady Tigers. Senior forward Hallie Creel scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard Makayla Martin chipped in 10 points.

The Cougars were 65-47 victors over the Tigers for coach Josh Watts. BA (16-3) got 19 points from Tyler Fortenberry, 11 points from Britton Nelson and 10 points from Dylan Fortenberry in the win.

BA opens district play with a trip to Oak Forest Friday night.

Lawrence County

Lawrence County dropped a pair of games at Raymond in their region opener. The Lady Rangers were 53-35 winners over coach Vicki Rutland and her Lady Cougars (7-8).

In the boys’ game coach Pat Bridges and his Cougars (12-4) led 19-18 after one quarter against the three-time defending 4A state champion Rangers.

Raymond outscored LC by nine in the second quarter and seven in the fourth to take a 71-56 victory.

LC stays on the road Friday when they travel to play Lanier in another tough region matchup.
