The end of the regular season is nigh for the local Region 7-2A teams as they all play Friday and then finish things off with a pair of games next week.

Finishing in the top two spots at the end of the regular season will earn teams a first-round bye in the region tournament.

Lady Bears still unbeaten in division play

It looks like coach Brooks Smith and his West Lincoln Lady Bears are on track for a three-peat as region champs. WL is currently 7-0 and leads second place Loyd Star (5-2) by two games.

West Lincoln hosts Wesson on Friday and then closes their regular season out with a trip to Enterprise next week and a senior night finale against Amite County at home.

The young Lady Bears began the season 0-4 but have now won seven games in a row to push their overall record to 12-8.

Tuesday night WL and Bogue Chitto ended the first quarter tied at 14 before the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Bobcats by eight points in the second quarter. Junior forward Brittany Sturkey led WL with 22 points.

Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt and his team travel to Amite County on Friday. The following week will be big for LS as they host Wesson and then close the regular season at BC.

The Lady Hornets (15-7, 5-2) beat Wesson 34-29 in their first matchup and BC 62-60 when the teams last played on Jan. 21.

Winning out would give Loyd Star the second seed in the division tournament that begins the week of February 10 at Loyd Star.

Tuesday night Loyd Star took care of Enterprise 56-22.

Division newcomers Wesson (11-11) currently sit in third place with a 4-3 record after beating Amite County 34-21 on Tuesday night. Wesson hosts Enterprise for senior night on Feb. 7 in their regular season finale.

Wesson and coach Michelle Nunnery were able to overtake Bogue Chitto for the third spot by beating the Lady Bobcats 39-37 on Jan. 24.

Coach Robbie Walters his BC Lady Bobcats (17-7, 3-4) were also on the wrong end of a close 62-60 loss to Bogue Chitto on Jan. 21.

Enterprise (3-16, 1-6) will most likely finish above Amite County (1-17, 1-6) in the final standings after the teams split their games — with EAC winning by 11 and losing by three.

Amite County leads WL by one game

The Amite County Trojans (16-3, 7-0) currently sit at the top of the table on the boys’ side of things.

On Jan. 21, they beat West Lincoln 81-54 in Liberty. Tuesday night the Trojans were 65-40 winners at Wesson.

That defeat to AC is the lone division loss for the Bears (12-8, 6-1) and coach Brooks Smith.

Wesson and coach Rusty Newman have the third seed close to being wrapped up (10-10, 4-3) as their only division losses are to the Bears and Trojans.

The next three seeds are up for grabs between Enterprise, Bogue Chitto and Loyd Star.

Coach Shane Adams and his EAC Yellow Jackets (4-14) are currently in third place with a 2-5 mark. Bogue Chitto (5-17) and Loyd Star (10-12) are both 1-6 in division play.

Loyd Star won the division last season, but West Lincoln was the only team to win a playoff game with a 78-61 win over Richton on the boys’ side.
