Take aim to help first responders at cornhole fundraiser

Central Mississippi Cornhole and Warriors of the Badge will host a fundraiser Feb. 15 at the old gym at Enterprise Attendance Center. Proceeds will go to Warriors of the Badge, a non-profit organization that provides aid to first responders and their families.

“A lot of people think Warriors of the Badge is just for law enforcement,” said firefighter Dustin Porter, one of the event’s organizers. “This is for anybody wearing the badge, and their families.”

The cornhole event will be divided into two divisions — recreational and competitive. The competitive division will follow official American Cornhole League rules, and participants will be required to provide their own ACL-approved bags. The recreational division is more relaxed, and requires no experience. Bags will be provided for this division.

Registration is $50 for each two-person team for either division. Registration is at 9 a.m. and competitions will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Porter said competitive cornhole is a growing sport, and they expect at least a few competitive teams to show up that day.

“They have it on ESPN every now and then,” Porter said. “As a matter of fact, there was a big tournament that went on Friday and Saturday.”

While teams register the day of the event, Porter said new competitive teams are encouraged to first create a profile at www.iplaycornhole.com. Players having trouble creating an account can receive assistance at the event.

In addition to cornhole, there will be live entertainment, food, silent and live auctions and activities for children.

The line-up for live entertainment is subject to change, but  organizers are expecting Dogwood Cross, Jake and Alisha Waldrop, Michael McCall and Clay Russell and the Wellman Men. Up-to-date information can be found on the Warriors of the Badge Facebook page.
