Region 7-2A hoops tournament tips Tuesday at Loyd Star

Hornetville will be the county seat of area basketball this week, as Loyd Star hosts the Region 7-2A basketball tournament Tuesday night, Thursday and Friday.

In all, 12 games will be played as teams will find out if they’ll play at home next week in the playoffs, on the road or if they’ll start planning for next season.

The West Lincoln Lady Bears (15-8) are the top overall seed after finishing 10-0 in league play.

Girls’ action starts Tuesday with Wesson (11-13, 4-5) taking on Enterprise (3-18, 1-8) at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will play West Lincoln Thursday at 4 p.m. in the first semifinal.

Bogue Chitto (19-8, 5-5) takes on Amite County (1-20, 1-9) at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in the other girls’ quarterfinal game. The winner of that one will face Loyd Star (18-7, 8-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.

The four teams that play Thursday will all qualify for the first round of the MHSAA 2A state tournament that begins next week. The top two teams host a playoff game on Monday, while the bottom two seeds will travel.

Friday the consolation game takes place at 4 p.m. with the championship tipping off at 7 p.m.

Amite County comes in on 10-game win streak

On the boys’ side of things everyone is trying to knock off an Amite County High team that is 19-3 overall and has a perfect division record. The Trojans last lost on Dec. 21 when they were edged out 45-41 by 3A Tylertown.

West Lincoln (13-10, 7-3) and Bogue Chitto (6-19, 2-8) meet up at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night in the opening boys’ game. The finale of the night will see Loyd Star (11-14, 2-8) tangling with Enterprise (4-16, 2-7).

The winner of the WL and BC game will face Wesson (12-10, 6-3) Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. in a semifinal game. The other semifinal takes place at 8:30 p.m. and has Amite County playing the winner between Loyd Star and Enterprise.

The Friday night consolation game starts at 5:30 p.m. and the championship will be played at 8:30 p.m.

Region 7-2A is matched up in the first round of the playoffs with Region 5-2A. On the boy’s side Heidelberg (21-5) is the top seed followed by Taylorsville (17-5), Bay Springs (13-11) and Puckett (8-17).

Puckett (24-3) is the top seed on the girls’ side followed by Bay Springs (19-4), Taylorsville (18-8) and Heidelberg (13-13).
