Three area teams saw their seasons end Monday night with defeats on the road as the MHSAA girls’ state playoffs began.

In Jasper County it was 2A state title contender Bay Springs (22-4) running away with a 63-39 win over the Wesson Lady Cobras (13-16).

For coach Michelle Nunnery and Wesson, it’s the end of one of the most successful seasons in recent memory while Bay Springs moves on to face East Marion (11-15) in the second round Friday.

The Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats (21-10) were also facing a 2A contender Monday night as they took on Puckett (26-3) in Rankin County. The homestanding Lady Wolves would prove to have too much firepower as they took a 68-33 win over the Lady Cats.

It’s a second straight playoff appearance for BC under second year head coach Robbie Walters.

Next up for Puckett is a Friday matchup with Scott Central (13-14) in the second round.

Lawrence County coach Vicki Rutland and her Lady Cougars (13-16) made the long trek to Jackson County Monday night as they faced a Moss Point team that’s a team to watch in the 4A playoffs after losing in the state semifinals last year.

Moss Point (22-7) jumped up 18-1 in the in the first quarter and never looked back as they took a 60-38 win. The Lady Tigers will next play Sumrall (14-10) on Friday.
