Saturday is last chance to vote absentee in Lincoln County

The Democratic and Republican primaries in Mississippi are Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Lincoln County Circuit Clerk Dustin Bairfield said voters still have until Saturday to vote absentee.

“Tuesday of next week is also spring break, so we’ve been trying to get the word out,” he said.

Bairfield’s office will be open from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, which will be the last chance for people to vote absentee. Bairfield said voter turnout is currently in-line with his expectations, where primaries see lower turnout than general elections.

“We’re probably right on track compared to four years ago,” he said. “If you look at four years ago, we had about 8,500 vote. In a normal election, we have close to 12,000 vote.”

Young voters age 17 also have the opportunity to vote in the primaries as long as they will be 18 during the general election. This year, voters born on or before Nov. 3, 2002 are eligible to vote. Residents should bring a photo ID with them when they go to vote.

Bairfield noted that, while many candidates have dropped out from the Democratic primaries, the actual ballots do not change after they have been printed.

“You definitely want to do some research on your candidates and know which one you’re voting for,” he said.

As of Thursday, Elizabeth Warren has said she has ended her campaign and Andrew Yang, Deval Patrick, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Michael R. Bloomberg and Tom Steyer have all withdrawn from the race.
