Here’s a look at area high school baseball action from earlier this week.

Brookhaven Academy

Wednesday morning Brookhaven Academy (5-6) found themselves down 5-1 to Columbia Academy in their matchup at the Parklane Tournament.

BA coach Caleb Upton saw his team score three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Columbia would hold on for a 5-4 victory.

Brookhaven Academy had previously beaten CA twice this season. Once a 9-5 win at Parklane and the other an 8-5 victory in a game played at Copiah-Lincoln C.C.

Junior Gavin Brogden led BA at the plate with a homerun and three RBIs. Collin Waldrop, Trevor Fortenberry, Caston Thompson, Dylan Fortenberry and Harrison Brownlee all hit safely for the Cougars.

Tanner Watts started on the mound and only tossed two innings. He struck out three and didn’t give up a hit on 19 pitches.

Judson Griffin took the loss after surrendering two earned runs on one hit. Brownlee pitched the final three innings and struck out two while giving up three earned runs on four hits.

BA begins MAIS District 4-4A play Tuesday with a home game against Cathedral at 6:30 p.m. They’ll then travel to Natchez on Friday for a doubleheader that starts at 4:30 p.m.

West Lincoln

Tuesday, the Bears (1-5) saw their stint at the Lawrence County Tournament end with an 8-0 defeat to Magee High.

Noah Addison, Cooper Moak, Brady Ratcliff, Taylor Allen and Travis Hall all hit safely for coach David Gilbert.

Ratcliff gave up nine hits and only three earned runs as he walked two and struck out one over six innings. The Bears committed three errors defensively.

The Bears open Region 7-2A play Tuesday at home against Wesson for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. The two teams then will play a doubleheader Friday at Wesson that begins at 4:30 p.m.

Loyd Star

Just like their county brethren from West Lincoln, the Loyd Star Hornets were on the wrong end of a matchup with a Simpson County School Tuesday in Monticello.

Offense was plentiful but the 4A Mendenhall Tigers had the hotter bats as they beat the Hornets 18-12.   

Reese DeHart and Stephen Mills had a double each for Loyd Star (3-3).  Mills drove in a team-high three runs for coach Jared Britt while Blake Thornton added a pair of RBIs.

Casen DeHart, Carter Holcomb and Peyton Morse also hit safely for LS.

Loyd Star will have a four-game week coming up as they host Bogue Chitto Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for their Region 7-2A opener. BC will host a double header between the schools beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Also, on Thursday the Hornets will travel to Salem to face the 1A Wildcats at 4 p.m.

Lawrence County

The Cougars took a 9-4-win Monday at their tournament over Copiah Academy. LC moves to 6-1 on the year and plays Bogue Chitto today for a pair of home games beginning at 11 a.m.

Lawrence County has put up strong offensive numbers all season and Monday that was again the case.

Zavian Bridges, Tae Cole, Hunter Daley and Ty Nelson all belted a double each for coach Seth Avants.

Junior Evan Lambert also hit a homerun — his second of the season.

Daley pitched the win and struck out seven on 120 pitches over seven innings. Daley only allowed two hits and walked five in his outing.

Lambert, Nelson and Payton Baylis drove in two runs each. Nathan Bullock also hit safely for LC in the win.
