The flags are ready, but the volunteers are needed.

Each year in May, members of American Legion Post 12 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4608 and Post 2618 gather to place small American flags on the graves of veterans. The only time this was not done in many years was 2018, when severe weather over the weekend prevented the flag placements.

Also each year, volunteers come alongside these veterans to help place flags in memory of those who served the country in the various Armed Forces.

Saturday at 8 a.m., anyone willing to help in this endeavor is asked to be at Rosehill Cemetery, ready to get busy. The group places about 3,000 flags on average — a difficult task for just a few hands and bent backs — so the assistance of volunteers is greatly needed and appreciated.

“It’s a pretty big job trying to get all these flags out,” said American Legion Post Commander Keith Reeves. “It would be so much easier if we had a lot of people show up to help out.”

The American Legion will begin placing flags at 8 a.m. Saturday at Rosehill Cemetery, and include Easthaven, Hillcrest and Carver Heights.

The VFW will place flags beginning at 10 a.m. Monday at Riverwood Memorial Park.
