The 2020 tax-free weekend will be Friday and Saturday.

Shoppers can expect to save during this year’s tax-free weekend, which will start at 12:01 a.m. July 31 and end at midnight Aug. 1. Sales tax will not be collected on clothing, footwear or school supplies during the holiday.

Items priced at $100 or more will be subject to sales tax, but a group of items totaling $100 will not. Rentals of clothing and footwear do not qualify for the sales tax holiday.

“Clothing” is any article including pants, shirts, blouses, dresses, coats, jackets, belts, hats and undergarments. “Footwear” is any article of article worn on the foot, and sport and performance footwear is excluded from the holiday.

School supplies include items that are commonly used by students in a course of study.

The purpose of the tax-free weekend is to ease the burden on shoppers preparing their children to return to school. With the effects of COVID-19, the tax-free weekend will be especially beneficial.

The sales tax holiday was passed in the 2009 Legislative Session and was amended in the 2019 Legislative Session.
