Police chief warns against those with violent plans for “our town”

At approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday, Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins took to Facebook to post a community announcement and warning — Brookhaven will be protected.

“Today, we had to break up a large disturbance in the South Second and Minnesota St. area, all over a Facebook post,” Collins said in the post, and thanked those who helped police disperse the crowd.

“Now, the individuals involved are armed and there is talk about doing a drive by,” Collins said. “We have kids staying in these homes and people that live in this community, that I, as the Chief of Police of Brookhaven MUST protect, and WILL protect.”

BPD officers have orders to arrest any person “pulling up to someone else’s home causing problems,” and their vehicles will be towed, the chief said.

At the time of the post, officers were awaiting an arrest warrant to be signed by a judge on an individual who threatened two police officers Tuesday night.

“Get your phones out and make sure they are on record,” Collins said in the post to the unnamed individual, “because we are going to lock you up and anybody else that interferes with us keeping our town safe.”

Collins warned those who think they were going to take over the town to leave, saying, “Our town is worth fighting for.”

“My two officers that got killed, will not die in vain. They gave their lives protecting this town, and we are going to honor them by protecting and serving everyone in this town. We are not perfect, but we will do this to the best of our ability.”
