Lincoln County reported nine new cases of COVID-19 since Friday and no new deaths, bringing the county’s case total to 1,026 while the death total remains steady at 52.

There were two new positive tests in teachers and/or staff of schools in Lincoln County during the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 4 — the most recent available data from MSDH — and 40 students quarantined due to exposure. A total of four students and two teachers/staff have tested positive since the beginning of the school year.

As of Sunday, KDMC had confirmed COVID-19 patients, all in ICU.

The state has reported 1,348 new cases of the coronavirus since Friday, and 64 new deaths.

The state’s cumulative total of cases is now 90,523, with a total of 2,734 reported coronavirus-related deaths.

There were 690 new cases and 27 new deaths posted Saturday and Sunday, 145 new cases and nine deaths Monday — the deaths were from Aug. 13 through Sept. 4, recently identified through death certificates — and 505 new cases and 28 deaths reported in the most recent numbers Tuesday.

Statewide, 524 people were hospitalized with confirmed infections, 143 were hospitalized with suspected infections, 178 were in ICU beds and 88 were on ventilators.

More than 87% of cases have not resulted in hospitalizations.

Nearly 79,000 are presumed recovered in Mississippi — 78,971 as of Sunday.

Worldwide, more than 29.1 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and approximately 926,000 — 3% — of these have died as a result. Approximately 69% have recovered to date.

To date, there have been 6.55 million cases and more than 194,000 deaths in the United States. The majority of these cases have been in California (more than 766,000), Texas (more than 694,000), Florida (more than 668,000) and New York (almost 450,000).

The majority of deaths have occurred in New York (32,633), New Jersey (16,035), Texas (14,532), California (14,439) and Florida (12,649). Of states and U.S.-owned territories, only American Samoa has no reported cases or deaths. The state with the least number of cases is Vermont (1,703) and Alaska is the state with the fewest deaths to date (41).

Mississippi currently ranks 23rd in total number of cases and 20th in deaths nationwide.

In the period from the week ending Jan. 4 through the week ending Aug. 22, 24,784 persons in Mississippi have died, according to MSDH records from provisional death certificate data. The average for the same period in 2017-2019 was 21,256 persons. Of these, 2,759 have died from pneumonia or influenza; 4,221 have died from COVID-19. On average 2017-2019, 1,497 people died in the same time period from pneumonia or influenza.

COVID-19 is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.
