First round of county tournament sees schools split games at BC, EAC

Here’s a look at area high school basketball results from earlier this week.

Loyd Star at Enterprise

Tuesday night in the Lincoln County Tournament, Loyd Star and Enterprise split their matchup at EAC.

In the opening girls’ game, Loyd Star got a 60-38 win to move its record to 2-1 on the season. Junior point guard Aubrey Britt led the Lady Hornets with 16 points. Loyd Star coach Seth Britt saw 11 different players score for his team.

Carson Hughey added nine points for Loyd Star and Marley Britt scored eight points. Baylee Zumbro, Riley Thornton, Marleigh Bullock and Alyssa Leggett scored four points each. Calia Beard added three points for LS while Brooke Lewis, Jaycee Case and Emma Falvey rounded out the Lady Hornet scoring with two points apiece.

The loss dropped EAC to 2-2 on the year. Mallory Honea and Natalie Harris led Enterprise with 10 points each. K. K. Jones chipped in eight points for coach Shane Adams. Shauna Hewitt added four points while Alexandra McGee scored three points, Allayna Barnett added two points and Mae McCorkle scored one point for Enterprise.

In the boys’ game, EAC snagged a 41-30 win. Both the Enterprise girls’ and boys’ team are coached by Adams while Britt coaches both Loyd Star teams, as well.

Enterprise senior point guard Hib Johnson scored a game-high 17 points to lead his team. Taylor Presley added 11 points for EAC. Payne Waldrop scored seven points, Anthony Nations added three points, Tre Baker scored two points and Brayden Polk chipped in one point for the Jackets.

Nathan Calcote scored 10 points to lead Loyd Star. Casen DeHart scored five points while Julius Smith, Blake Thornton and Carter Holcomb added three points each. Will McCullough, Lawson Smith and Corey Martin scored two points apiece to round out the LS scoring.

West Lincoln at Bogue Chitto

There was also a split of the two Lincoln County Tournament games played at Bogue Chitto Tuesday.

The girls’ game saw West Lincoln squeeze past BC by a 47-44 final.

The Lady Bears (3-0) got a team-high 15 points from Kara Beth Addison while Ta’Kyla Brothern and Brittany Sturkey added 10 points each.

Jena Hughes and A’mya Brown scored six points apiece for coach Brooks Smith.

De’Mya Porter led BC (5-1) with 16 points. Kayci Beth Wallace and Fayth Magee added eight points each for the Lady Bobcats. Rylea Carter and Kaitlin Poole each chipped in five points and Kylie Windmiller rounded out the scoring with two points.

Smith coaches both West Lincoln teams while Robby Walters is the head coach for both Bogue Chitto teams.

In the boys’ game the Bobcats played their first game of the season and got a close 45-43 win over WL.

Tra Makabee was a one-man wrecking crew for the Bobcats as he scored a game high 30 points in the win. Makabee knocked down four fourth quarter 3-pointers to lead his team.

Shomari Jenkins added 11 points for BC while Tristan Buffington and Jay May scored two points each.

West Lincoln was led by 18 points from Enrico Price. Trevon Jones added eight points and Ty Brotherns chipped in seven points. Tate Smith scored four points while Tristin Rollins and Spencer Maxwell added two points each for the Bears.

Lady Cougars beat Copiah Academy

COVID-19 canceled the boys’ game scheduled for Tuesday between Brookhaven Academy and Copiah Academy after the Colonels were forced into quarantine.

Despite that, the girls’ teams from both schools were able to play their game in John R. Gray Gymnasium.

The Lady Cougars and coach Ron Kessler moved to 7-2 with a 57-39 win over the visitors from Gallman.

BA got a team-high 14 points from junior point guard Anne Brantley Warren. Junior forward Emily Claire Felder chipped in 13 points and Abby Grace Richardson scored 11 points.

Madison Moak scored seven points while Bailee Goodson added four points. Allison Covington, Emma Gates, Makayla Martin and Mallory Nations all chipped in two points each.

BA is scheduled to travel to Bowling Green School in Franklinton, Louisiana, for a set of games today.

Wesson vs. Salem

It was a clean sweep for Wesson in their home opener Tuesday as the Cobras captured a pair of wins over visiting Salem.

In the girl’s game the Lady Cobras (1-1) blew out Salem by a 63-21 final.

Twelve different Lady Cobras scored for coach Michelle Nunnery.

Sophomore Jaylynn Cloy scored a team high 12 points. Breanna Grant-Hall added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Destini Jones added nine points and Jahnasia Harris chipped in six points. Kionna Gibson scored five points while Meleyjah Lyons, Tarayvia Miller, and Kimora Smith all scored four points each.

Jayla Martin added three points and Breanna Smith, O’koya Barlow and Brenda Smith each scored two points.

In the boys’ game, Wesson held of Salem 51-46 in the Cobras season opener. Salem is coached by Wesson alum and former Wesson assistant coach Tyler Allen.

Antrelle Sims led Wesson with 19 points and Larson Lewis added 12 for coach Rusty Newman. Connor Bradshaw also scored in double digits with 10 points.

Also scoring for the Cobras was Terrance Haley with five points, Nic Edwards with three points and Zaquavious Harris with two points.

“We were a little rusty with it being our first game and having a lot of guys in new positions and a few new faces,” said Newman. “We made some big shots down the stretch that helped us seal the win. Proud of my guys for playing hard and finding a way to come out on top.”
