BA sweeps ACCS to remain perfect in district

Brookhaven Academy met little resistance Thursday in John R. Gray Gymnasium as they rolled past visiting Adams County Christian School for a pair of big wins.

In the opening girls’ game, the Lady Cougars moved to 25-6 on the season and 6-0 in MAIS District 4-4A play with a 47-12 win.

Nine members of the team got in the scoring ledger for coach Ron Kessler led by MaKayla Martin with 10 points. Abby Grace Richardson and Lillie Gates scored eight points each for BA while Madison Moak chipped in five points.

Bailee Goodson added four points, as did Emma Gates. Anna Caroline Adams and Emily Claire Felder scored three points apiece, while Anne Brantley Warren rounded out the scoring with two points.

The boys’ matchup was tight early, but in the second half the Cougars steadily pulled away to take a 54-34 victory over the Rebels. BA is now 16-10 on the year and also 6-0 in division play.

Coach Josh Watt’s team was led by junior forward Tyler Fortenberry’s 23-point output. The senior duo of Dylan Fortenberry and Gavin Brogden were also both in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Senior forward Gage Brown added four points, Trevor Fortenberry scored two points and senior Trey Fortenberry had one point for the Cougars.

The Cougars will wrap up the regular season next week with a home date against Silliman Institute on Tuesday, Feb. 2, and a trip to face Cathedral School in Natchez on Thursday, Feb. 4.

The MAIS 4A South State Tournament begins Feb. 9 at Simpson Academy.
