King’s Daughters Medical Center has been recognized by the Mississippi Perinatal Quality Collaborative for achieving Excellence in Obstetric Hemorrhage Care, for fully implementing evidence-based safety measures proven to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality.

Obstetric blood loss remains one of the most significant contributors to preventable medical conditions and death in expectant and new mothers. While many adverse events are neither predictable nor preventable, the application of standardized, evidence-based and team-based care across the hospital setting can effectively reduce maternal injury and death.

Mississippi has a disproportionately high pregnancy-related mortality rate with 33.5 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to 15.9 for the United States as a whole. Improving maternal outcomes will require focused, system-wide efforts that maximize the use of evidence-based strategies.

“Our team of physicians and nurses are dedicated to caring for our mothers and newborns,” said Angie Williamson, RN-BC, KDMC’s Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum director. “We understand the importance of these safety measures and how they protect women giving birth in Mississippi.”
