Lady Bears take care of East Marion and move to 2A quarterfinals

Wednesday night the West Lincoln Lady Bears (18-2) led 11-7 after the first quarter of their MHSAA 2A second round playoff game against East Marion.

West Lincoln would build on that lead over the final three quarters to take a 52-33 win. The Lady Bears are back in action Friday when they travel to Union High for a quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m.

“We came out a little flat but started to get some separation in the second half,” said WL head coach Brooks Smith.

Sophomore point guard Kara Beth Addison led WL with 11 points in the win. Addison also made five steals, grabbed four rebounds, handed out four assists and blocked two shots.

Senior forward Brittany Sturkey added 10 points and five rebounds while senior guard Jena Hughes chipped in 10 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward T’Kyla Brothern scored nine points, grabbed 12 points and made three assists.

Off the bench West Lincoln got five points and two steals from sophomore Mary Claire Johnson. Sophomore Madilyn Case added three points and six rebounds while senior A’Mya Brown pulled down five rebounds. Preslee Rushing scored two points and to round out the WL scoring Mailey Kate Young and Ramsey Hall scored one point each.

“We’ll need to play better going forward than we did Wednesday,” said Smith. “We appreciate the support from out crowd and hope to see a sea of green make the trip to Union.”Union (24-6) beat Puckett 61-31 Wednesday and took out Bogue Chitto 46-43 earlier in the week in the first round.

The winner between West Lincoln and Union will move on the 2A semifinals in the Mississippi Coliseum to face the winner between Calhoun City and Mantachie.
