Benefit, car show for local teenager a success

A car show and silent auction conducted Saturday at Lincoln Civic Center was a success in helping raise funds for Lincoln County teenager Derrick Stewart, according to his uncle Adam Smith.

Stewart lost his right leg below the knee in an October 2020 ATV accident. The benefit was conceived as a way to help cover the family’s medical costs and the price of a prosthetic leg. Prosthetics can cost from $10,000-$50,000 and must be replaced every few years due to wear and tear, Smith said.

“God blessed us with a beautiful day Saturday and lots of people came out to be a blessing to Derrick and his family,” said Sandy Smith, Adam Smith’s wife. “It makes you very proud to live in a small town like Brookhaven when you see all the caring people that are ready to jump in and help lend a helping hand when you need it.”

Smith said various Brookhaven businesses were very generous making monetary donations or providing items for the silent auction.

“Just another reason we should shop local,” Sandy Smith said.

Raffle winners Saturday included Sonya King, compound bow; Matt Jordan, gun; and Michelle Purvis, quilt.

“We thank God for allowing Derrick to still be here with us,” Smith said.
