COVID update — MSDH: 240 more viral cases, 2 deaths

The state health department reported 240 new cases of COVID-19 Monday and two new deaths.

Mississippi has now had 313,166 positive cases of the coronavirus and 7,228 related fatalities.

Lincoln County’s case number has risen by 13 since Monday to 3,950, though the county’s death total remains at 110.

For the counties bordering Lincoln County:

• Amite County — 1,228 cases and 42 deaths.

• Copiah County — 2,964 cases and 65 deaths.

• Franklin County — 836 cases and 23 deaths.

• Jefferson County — 654 cases and 28 deaths.

• Lawrence County — 1,283 cases and 23 deaths.

• Pike County — 3,301 cases and 105 deaths.

• Walthall County — 1,338 cases and 45 deaths.

None of these counties reported any new coronavirus-related deaths since Monday.

Counties with the greatest number of positive cases over the course of the pandemic are DeSoto (21,496 cases, 257 deaths — 86 new cases and one new death) and Hinds (20,294 cases — 43 new — and 414 deaths, none new reported).

Counties with the least number of positive cases are Issaquena (unchanged at 168 cases, six deaths — unchanged in the past week) and Sharkey (503 cases — one new since Monday — and 17 deaths). Though Quitman County has added six more cases to reach 802, it has only recorded 16 deaths to date.

On Wednesday, 186 patients were hospitalized statewide with confirmed COVID-19 infections and 31 were hospitalized with suspected infections. Fifty-eight patients were in intensive care units and 27 were on ventilators.

MSDH presumes 301,872 previously infected individuals have recovered from the coronavirus as of May 3.
